Chameleon Arts Ensemble opens its 2018-2019 chamber music season with “where past and future meet” – a program of breakthrough works that capture composers at significant points in their development. Strauss’ Sonata for cello and piano is an early piece rooted in classical traditions but filled with his burgeoning heroic voice, and the Chamber Symphony No. 1 is a major signpost in Schoenberg’s stylistic evolution, pushing tonal harmony to its limit. Earl Kim reflects on life’s fragility with his poignant protest against nuclear war, “Now and Then” for soprano, flute, viola, and harp. Finally, Beethoven’s audacious coming-out statement – the Piano Trio in c minor, Op. 1, No. 3 – represents the apex of Classical style and the starting point for his high drama to come.
