Join us as we discuss how to dismantle the notion of the strong black woman.
As a committed leader for mental wellness advocacy, Mindful + Melanated is hosting Strong Black Woman: Redefined, a virtual panel discussion that aims to raise awareness about how subscribing to the Strong Black Woman concept can be (and has been) detrimental to the mental wellness of Black women.
Studies have shown that along with the stigma, the belief that we as black women are uniquely resilient to mental distress prevents us from seeking professional mental health treatment when its needed.
“For a long time I believed that being a Strong Black Woman meant that I should be able to deal with my problems on my own, and that I just need to suck it up and get over my depression. After three hospitalizations and two mental breakdowns, I told myself enough is enough. I need to stop being ashamed of my condition and treat it is as anyone would treat their physical illness,” said Regina Renaye the founder of Mindful + Melanated.
Each of our panelists will share their experiences and talk about what they believe we need to do in order to redefine what it means to be a strong black woman.
Panelists include Nieisha Deed of PureSpark, Ivy Watts of Beautifully Simply You, and Priscilla Flint of the Black Economic Justice Institute.
