Scientists believe that a supermassive black hole lies hidden in the heart of our very own Milky Way galaxy. Essential for learning about star evolution, galaxy formation, and the nature of space-time, black holes were predicted by Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, but they have never been observed. Astrophysicists hope that the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) will change that. By linking data from many powerful telescopes scattered around the Earth, the EHT will create a "virtual" telescope the size of the entire planet that may be able to provide the impossible — an image of a black hole with unprecedented detail. Find out the latest on this intrepid project and what we know about black holes.
