A number of the finest English and European musicians were hired to serve Queen Elisabeth I in her royal chapel, at court or as grooms to the Queen. At the very center of the court music-making were the royal lutes and viols. Anthony Holborne was one of the most prolific composers of instrumental music, writing solos and consort music for lute, cittern, bandora and violas da gamba. Come hear fantasies, ballad tunes, pavans, galliards, almains and jigs, including Holborne’s finger-twister “The Gordian Knot” for solo lute. The concert will also feature works by Byrd, Morley, Collard, Ferrabosco I and John Johnson. Look out for some very remarkable plucked instruments: the cittern and the bandora, seldom seen and heard these days, being played by our expert lutenist, Olav Chris Henriksen!
The members of El Dorado Ensemble are all active Boston-area musicians, frequently heard in concerts and recordings throughout the region. Recent performances include an appearance at the Portland (Maine) Early Music Festival. Carol Lewis and Olav Chris Henriksen are two of America’s leading early musicians, performing frequently in recitals individually and together, as well as with internationally acclaimed ensembles including Boston Camerata, Hespèrion XXI, Capriccio Stravagante, Waverly Consort, and Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra.
