This is a 7.8 miles round-trip with 2,800ft gain and is rated a Moderate Winter Hike Hiking as a group, it should take us 5 to 6 hrs. Please bring microspikes.
We'll make a steady ascent up the woodsy Starr King Trail to Starr King summit (3,907 ft) then Mt. Waumbek summit (4,006 feet /1,221 meters), and continue 0.1 mile to a viewpoint onlooking the Presidential Range. Mt. Starr King, and the Starr King Trail, are named for Thomas Starr King, a Boston and San Francisco Unitarian minister and author of The White Hills (1887), an important book about the White Mountains. A shelter had once been located near the summit of Mt. Starr King. All that remains is its fireplace. "Waumbek" is an Abenaki (Native Indian) word for "white."
