Science by the Pint is a free science café in which we invite a Boston-area research lab out to a pub or brewery to chat science over a cold one. The events are geared toward a general audience – all are welcome and no experience is necessary!
This week's event features:
Dr. Barbara Shinn-Cunningham
Professor of Biomedical Engineering
Boston University
Dr. Shinn-Cunningham’s research focuses on how we use attention to sort out an incredibly complex auditory world, highlighting relevant information and discarding the noise. Through several active collaborations, her group investigates auditory attention in both typical and atypical populations, including persons with ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Other ongoing projects involve deciphering how the brain combines auditory and visual information into multisensory objects, and developing novel ways to use neural signals to detect the earliest subtle signs of hearing loss. Addressing such a wide range of topics requires an equally diverse bevy of techniques, including human behavior, computational modelling, measuring electrical brain signals (EEG), using stimulating currents to temporarily alter brain activity (tDCS), and neural imaging (fMRI). Dr. Shinn-Cunningham balances a fruitful scientific career with her other lives as a parent, an oboist, and a fencer. En garde!
