Songs in the Key of Life… and Love is the central theme for Chameleon Arts Ensemble’s Up Close recital featuring soprano Mary Mackenzie and pianist Vivian Chang-Freiheit. The concert is anchored by Robert Schumann’s magnificent songs of devotion, Frauenlieben und –leben, which follow a woman’s love from first glimpse through marriage and death. Similarly, Vaughan Williams’ Blake Songs for soprano and oboe offer a rich dialogue that spans a lifetime. Schubert’s classic, Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel, reflects her despair at love lost, and Jake Heggie’s The Deepest Desire is a poignant setting of Sister Helen Prejean’s meditation on the intersections of love and faith. A selection of cabaret songs by Kurt Weill completes the program.
The performance will take place in Mary Norton Hall at Old South Church, transformed into an intimate cabaret setting with table seating and refreshments, and the concert will be hosted by Artistic Director Deborah Boldin. Tickets are $47, with $5 off for students and seniors. For more information or to order tickets, please call 617-427-8200 or visit http://www.chameleonarts.org.
