The Harvard Jazz Orchestra (HJO) is Harvard University’s premier jazz ensemble, bringing together the highest-level undergraduate and graduate musicians to explore the rich traditions and evolving innovations of jazz. HJO performs a diverse repertoire, spanning from swing and bebop to contemporary jazz and fusion, providing students with an immersive experience in both performance and jazz scholarship.
Harvard’s jazz program was founded in 1971 by Director of Bands Thomas G. Everett and has been developed in conjunction with the Office for the Arts at Harvard (OFA) since 1976. Today, the orchestra is led by Yosvany Terry, an internationally acclaimed saxophonist and composer, with Yaure Muniz serving as assistant director.
HJO performs at various local jazz festivals, campus concerts, and dances, while also studying the history, styles, and literature of jazz. A hallmark of the program is the annual Jazz Master in Residency, which brings world-class artists to Harvard to collaborate with students through workshops and performances.
Beyond Harvard, HJO has embarked on international tours to destinations such as Cuba (2023), the Dominican Republic, and more, fostering cultural exchanges through music. The ensemble’s excellence and deep connection to jazz education make it a major force in Harvard’s music scene and beyond
