Join us for a celebration of local zine creativity and brilliance!
This is a free event.
We are excited to announce the official "coming out" of our Take-a-Zine Leave-a-Zine stand outside the armory in Somerville. The creation of the zine stand has been a wild ride. We'll tell you the story at the party!
This event will include:
✰≼ Fast-paced presentations by local zine makers about their favorite zines, zine making skills you can learn, and more
✰≼ A zine making station where you can learn to make your own zine (and a printer so you can make copies to leave in the zine stand!)
✰≼ A quirky art silent auction (the proceeds of which will go toward funding zine stand repairs and other Pleasure Pie creative undertakings)
✰≼ Free zines!
FAQs:
Q: I'm a zine maker! Can I give a presentation?
A: We'd love to hear your presentation idea! Here's the presenter application: https://forms.gle/xdv7saQw3n3bbSfd9
Q: What if I'm hungry/thirsty?
A: We will be in the armory cafe, which sells food and drinks. Yum!
Q: Is the space wheelchair accessible?
A: Yep!
Q: Are masks required?
A: You are welcome to wear a mask, but we are not requiring masks. Also, please stay home if you're feeling under the weather!
Q: Can I bring my friends?
A: Absolutely! Let's spread the zine love. The only potential issue is that the cafe has a maximum capacity of 52 people. Since this is not a ticketed event, we don't know how many people are going to show up. There have been times in the past that our events have reached capacity and we've had to turn people away. We recommend getting there early to ensure your spot.
Q: Is there a cost to attend?
A: Nope! This is a free event. Though, if you'd like to make a donation to help fund the cost of zine stand materials and repairs, we would love that. You can donate via Venmo (@nicolemaz).
Q: Wait, what's the zine stand?
A: It's like a little free library for zines! It's part of the Take-a-Zine, Leave-a-Zine Project.
Q: Okay, but what are zines?
A: Oh wow, it's an honor to introduce you to one of the world's best things. Zines are independently made booklet-type things. They're self-published, often printed on copy machines (though not always), and can have writing, drawings, photos, comics, journal entries, music reviews, and so much more. It's pronounced "zeen."
Q: When you say "coming out," is this a queer thing or...?
A: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The zine stand is a place to trade all kinds of zines, including (but not limited to) queer zines. But we're a sex education organization run largely by queer folks, so we love a good coming out celebration. You don't have to be queer to come to this event, though!
