Help us celebrate Women's History Month! Zines and feminism have been closely linked since the 1970s, as these low-cost, self-published materials provided women—especially those from marginalized communities—a platform to challenge mainstream narratives, share personal experiences, and critique traditional feminist discourse. By circumventing traditional publishing barriers, feminist zines became powerful tools for self-expression and collective organizing.
During this fun and interactive three-hour workshop with artist Meghan Bailey, participants will explore the history of zines, understand the relationship between zine making and feminist practice, explore zine resources, and learn how to cut and fold a zine. The CAA will host a follow-up Zine Trading event several months later that provides an optional opportunity for participants to socialize, share and trade your zines.
Materials provided: Stapler, ruler, glue sticks, tape, x-acto blade, scissors, bone folders, limited selection of magazines, copy paper, pencils, pens, markers, and letter stencils.
Suggested materials (bring if you like): old newspapers, magazines, clip art books, colored paper, post-it notes, stickers and business cards, washi tape, paint, pastel, pencil, colored pencil, pen, ink, marker, scissors, glue sticks, drawing or copy paper, stencils, stamps, etc.
About the Instructor
Meghan Bailey is a Boston-based artist whose work has been shown in galleries throughout the Northeast. She is an active member of the artist community in Somerville, MA where she maintains a studio at 11 Miller Street Studios. Meghan holds an MFA in Visual Arts from Lesley University, a BFA in painting from Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and an MS in Library Science and Archives Management from Simmons University.
She currently works as an archivist in the Healey Library at the UMass Boston archives where she introduces students to the research and use of historical collections for their studies. Her work with historical collections inspires her artwork and exploration of objects of personal relevance, their significance, inherent politics, and how art can enhance, challenge, and make new meaning.
