Join us for an evening with Maine author Elena Sarni to discuss her new book Trailblazing Women Printmakers: Virginia Lee Burton Demetrios and the Folly Cove Designers.
The Folly Cove Designers (1941-1969) was a predominantly women-based block-printing collective that was founded in Gloucester, Massachusetts by children's book author and illustrator Virginia Lee Burton Demetrios (of The Little House and Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel Fame). The group produced more than three hundred designs and were propelled to international fame through commercial textile contracts with major retailers such as Lord & Taylor and F. Schumacher, articles in leading periodicals including Life, and participation in seminal fine craft exhibitions. Trailblazing Women Printmakers is the first comprehensive history to be published on the Folly Cove Designers.
Elena's talk explores the formation of the Folly Cove Designers, the community and its Finnish roots, Virginia's teaching methods and process, as well as highlights signature designs by various group members, shares preliminary sketches, and even some never-before-seen designs. After the talk, Elena will be taking questions about this remarkable group, as well as her 13-year journey working on the book.
