This symposium is offered in conjunction with the special exhibition Homer at the Beach: A Marine Painter’s Journey, 1869–1880, an exploration of the earliest marine works of Winslow Homer (1836–1910). On Friday, October 4 at 6:00 p.m., Dr. Sylvia Yount, Lawrence A. Fleischman Curator in Charge of the American Wing, Metropolitan Museum of Art, presents the keynote lecture. A day of talks by noted scholars, curators and college and university professors follows on Saturday, October 5, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (see detailed schedule below)

On occasion of the CAM and Harvard Art Museums concurrent Homer exhibitions Homer at the Beach, curated by William Cross and Winslow Homer: Eye Witness, co-curated by Ethan Lasser, John Moors Cabot Chair of the Art of the Americas, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the symposium includes presentations about these special exhibitions by Cross and Lasser respectively. Additionally, six papers will be presented, exploring topics related to Homer’s art and life.

Entry to the symposium includes Museum admission, a bag lunch, closing panel discussion with Sylvia Yount, Martha Tedeschi (Elizabeth and John Moors Cabot Director, Harvard Art Museums) and Kathleen Foster (Robert L.
