The performers for this year’s Fluff Festival are ready to a hot line-up sure to work off your sugar rush.

“What the Fluff?: A Tribute to Union Square Invention” honors the illustrious Fluff creator, Archibald Query, who concocted the gooey sticky spread right here in Union Square in 1917. On Saturday, September 27, 2014 local artists, musicians, theatrical performers, inventors, and humorists pay madcap tribute to the creation of this great American foodstuff on two stages.

For the ninth annual “What the Fluff?” festival we’re thinking of the early days of Somerville and of the manufacture of Fluff and taking on the theme of Steam-Fluff, a mash-up of steampunk and Marshmallow Fluff.

This year’s performances include Federator N°1, an 12 piece afrobeat, afro-dance ban and a key instigator in Boston’s musical movements. Bringing Fela Kuti to the Fluff Fest, Federator N°1 will help keep your feet from sticking to the ground with the funky energy of afrobeat.

Emperor Norton’s Stationary Marching Band combines the rich musical history of the circus and the vagabond peoples of Europe with the raw energy of avant-garde jazz, the burning heat of funk and the irreverence and fun of today’s Vaudeville for a sound that is somehow familiar yet like no other. Some call them Gypsy Steamfunk – we just call them awesome.

Our third musical act is The Dirty Dottys. With catchy melodies and giggle-inducing lyrics The Dirty Dottys’ pop-Motown originals and slew of fun cover will have you singing along and grabbing a friend to boogie! This 6 piece group is all about bringing the fun. Get ready to dance!

The Flufferettes were originally a music group in the 1930s that promoted Fluff on the radio for Durkee Mower, the makers, of Marshmallow Fluff. We bring that group alive each year for the visual age as colorful and sassy song-and-dance performers. The ladies of Rogue Burlesque return to the festival with their unique brand of gorgeous, geeky burlesque.

Beyond the performances from the main stage, Fluff games and shenanigans will spread the sticky goodness throughout the Union Square. Fest-goers can sample the taste of Fluff from our local vendors presenting sweet and savory Fluffalicious delights. Pair these with Fluff-inspired cocktails and other foods from nearby businesses who are all caught up in the spirit. Sink deep into the sugary fun by creating a mallowey concoction for the cook-off or competing in the “Fabulous Pharoah of Fluff” competition.
