The Program:
J. S. Bach, “French” Suite No. 5 in G major, BWV 816 (1723)
Joseph Boulogne, Adagio in F Minor (c. 1777)
Ludvig van Beethoven, Diabelli Variations, Op. 120 (1823)
Stewart Goodyear, Acabris! Acabras! Acabram! (2016). U.S. Premiere.
About the performance:
In 1823, the publishing house of Cappi & Diabelli issued a volume of composers’ treatments of a simple waltz by none other than Anton Diabelli himself. This exercise in showmanship yielded an unlikely and astonishing motherlode of music, including perhaps the greatest of all variation sets, Beethoven’s fiendishly difficult Diabelli Variations. Gramophone called Stewart Goodyear’s interpretations of Beethoven “vital, stylishly insightful.” In addition to the Variations and Bach’s French Suite No. 5, the program features an Adagio by the legendary Joseph Boulogne—a composer of African ancestry who was the toast of 18th-century Paris—and Goodyear’s own “Acabris! Acabras! Acabram!,” a tone poem for piano inspired by a French-Canadian folktale.
