The first Waltham City Council meeting of the fall session is coming on September 14th. We invite you to join us to commemorate this meeting for several reasons. The first is that Waltham residents deserve a city where its departments value transparency.
On June 22nd the Waltham City Council voted on a resolution asking the Waltham Police Department for data, such as use of force, diversity in the police department and other things we don’t believe that should cause any concern from a police department that has utilized the BLM hashtag .
The deadline set by the Council (9/1/2020) has come and gone, and as of today the city has not received any data or communication from the WPD about it.
This is more than just a protest of transparency, considering that this is the first meeting of the session we need to make sure our voice is loud and clear in saying that we want a municipal government that works for everyone.
For far too long this legislative body has been little more than a special permit machine, churning out favors to large developers in exchange for money and courtesy.
For far too long this our legislative body has done little to nothing for working class people, for immigrants and BIPOC; it has done little to nothing to stop the coming climate crisis besides symbolic and performative resolutions; it has done little to address the housing crisis that is only going to get worse as a wave of evictions will tear through the Southside of Waltham. And our own council has a transparency problem of its own; committees going unrecorded, most votes taken by acclamation, minutes that are months and months behind.
While Waltham once led the nation in innovation, we now have little to be proud of from our local government and want to encourage our community to come together and demand better.
We take pride in our diverse community, the drive and enthusiasm our residents work together with to address challenges. But our government does not represent this. We need change, and we demand change, and we know that change is possible if we work together.
That is why we will be convening outside of the Government Center where the City Council meeting will be taking place. We will be outlining a People's Agenda. The Councillors can work with us on these things, they can bring forward resolutions and motions themselves addressing these issues, or we will drive the election of candidates that will better represent ALL of Waltham.
Make your voice heard with us.
Please wear a mask and social distance when possible.
