Learn about the incredible journey of the USS Jamestown, whose 1847 mission brought aid across the Atlantic during the Irish Famine.
In 1847, the USS Jamestown set sail from the Charlestown Navy Yard loaded with food to ease suffering during the famine in Ireland.
More than 5,000 ships left Ireland during the great potato famine, transporting the starving and the destitute away from their stricken homeland. The first vessel to sail in the other direction, to help the millions unable to escape, was the USS Jamestown.
This unprecedented voyage became what is now recognized as America's first major humanitarian relief effort, and set the stage for future missions that would establish the country as a leader in international aid.
Come hear the remarkable story at at the site where it all began with the launch of Stephen Puleo’s new book Voyage of Mercy: The USS Jamestown, the Irish Famine, and the Remarkable Story of America’s First Humanitarian Mission
Event will include an author talk followed by a book signing and reception featuring traditional Irish music. Seating is limited, and advance registration is recommended. *Please remember to cancel your registration if you are no longer able to attend, so that others may enjoy this free event.*
