Learn to repair holes, reinforce weak areas, and cover stains with two different darning techniques! Darning is a fabric mending method that involves reinforcing or re-weaving a portion of fabric by hand. Worked in the round, these darns create texture and reinfoce damaged areas, and are great for both knit and woven fabrics. Bring a garment to practice on, or create a sampler of the techniques that you can take home and refer back to later!
Level: Adventurous beginner or intermediate! It helps if you've done a little bit of stitching before, but we'll go over a few basics like threading a needle and tying a knot.
Limited to 6 students.
Materials to bring to class:
- A garment to darn! Garments that are ideal for this type of mending include knits like sweaters, tshirts, and socks; and wovens like cotton tops, skirts and dresses. This isn't really great for performance fabrics and active wear (think waterproof raincoats and lycra.)
- Needles - chenille needle, size 22 for woven fabrics; and/or tapestry needle, size 22 for knit fabrics
- Darning egg for socks & small areas, or a small (no larger than 8") embroidery hoop for sweaters or larger areas
- Yarn or embroidery floss - for filling in holes, a thicker yarn that matches the weight and fiber content of your garment is best. For darns that will hide stains or reinforce thin areas, it's okay to mix it up! This is a great opportunity to play with color and texture!
