On December 7 & 8, Vernon Street Studios will host its special 50th anniversary Open Studios event. As one of oldest open studios events in Somerville, Vernon Street Studios has been recognized for its mix of high-calibur artists and exciting newcomers. Just in time for the holiday season, visitors can expect to find a broad spectrum of fine art styles and craft media, including painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, glass works, fiber arts, jewelry, furniture, and ceramics. The open studios event will also be an opportunity to walk the halls of the historic brick factory building, which once housed the Derby Desk Factory before becoming the address for a foam company that used to make Nerf footballs.
There also will be a special retrospective exhibit featuring Vernon Street artists both past and present at the Nave Gallery that opens December 3rd. It will feature artists such as Clara Wainwright, Ariel Freiberg, Steven Cabral, Kathryn Geismar, Diane Novetsky, Karen Moss, Christine Palamidessi, Paul Shakespear, Suzanne Lubeck, and many more. In addition, there will be a short documentary about Vernon Street Studios showcased at the Nave by filmmaker Anne Continelli. This show will not only highlight the breadth of talent that has circulated through the halls of Vernon, but give a glimpse into its rich history by displaying historical documents.
