Venetian Baroque: Celebrating Barbara Strozzi
Music by Barbara Strozzi, Antonia Bembo, Francesco Cavalli, and others

Stirring performances combined with groundbreaking scholarship! Led by 2009 Radcliffe Institute Fellow and Brandeis University WSRC Resident Scholar Laury Gutiérrez, this award-winning ensemble brings to life music by female composers almost forgotten by history. Vibrant works long overlooked or only recently discovered. Passionate arias, moving laments, and delightful instrumental music.
Born exactly four centuries ago, Barbara Strozzi (1619–1677) was at the heart of Venice’s unique and thriving musical culture. She and Antonia Bembo (ca. 1640–1720), both taught by the city’s most prominent composer Francesco Cavalli, found distinctive ways to sing and to create extraordinarily passionate music. Our program includes captivating songs and powerful laments by Strozzi from several of her eight published collections, as well as arias from Bembo’s collection Produzione armoniche and Cavalli’s opera L’Artemisia.
