The United American Indians of New England (UAINE) will host their 53rd annual National Day of Mourning on Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Pebbles Restaurant, 76 Water St., in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The purpose of the event is to foster greater awareness and understanding among the American public of the destructive presence of pilgrims and settlers in around Patuxet, currently also known as Plymouth.

“The National Day of Mourning is a tradition for many Indigenous people and their supporters to honor Native ancestors and to tell Wampanoag stories,” said The Rev. Paul T. Egensteiner, bishop of the Metropolitan New York Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).  Bishop Engensteiner will attend the Day of Mourning event this year. “In recent years, in partnership with Vance Blackfox, ELCA’s Director of Indigenous Ministries and Tribal Relations; and Jennifer DeLeon, ELCA’s Director of Racial Justice; we have begun our work to educate members of our church about the profound significance of the National Day of Mourning,” he added.

“Our sincere hope is that, in the future, more individuals will come to grasp the profound truth behind this day and the enduring experiences of Indigenous people,” said Jennifer DeLeon. “Lutherans need to take the time to empathize with Indigenous Nations and help educate others,” she added.
