It's Ula After Dark -- our special after-hours events series to bring the community together around good culture and great food.

On Friday February 28th, we're gathering for an evening of socializing, celebration, and learning with prominent professors discussing Black history and excellence. Expect engaging conversations, meaningful connections, and a night to remember!

We'll have the full menu available (plus beer and wine!) so you can have dinner and drinks too.

About Our Panel

Dr. Tony Van Der Meer is a Senior Lecturer in the Africana Studies Department. He is a scholar-practitioner rooted in Leadership and Change praxis; liberatory pedagogies; and African indigenous spiritual knowledge systems.

Dr. Keith Jones is a scholar and teacher of African diasporic and multi-ethnic literatures, decolonial theory, Black feminist theory, critical pedagogy, and poetry and poetics. He teaches in the Africana Studies Department.

Together, Dr. Van Der Meer and Dr. Jones were co-recipients of the Chancellor’s Distinguished Service Award at UMass Boston for their leadership in campus-wide efforts during the COVID pandemic and the George Floyd uprisings to help transform the university into an anti-racist and health-promoting public research institution.

Paula C. Austin is Associate Professor of History and Associate Director of African American and Black Diaspora Studies. She is the author of Coming of Age in Jim Crow DC: Navigating the Politics of Everyday Life (NYU Press, 2019). She teaches African American history, with a focus on Black women and Black childhoods in US history, and critical university studies.
