Learn how to hike in the winter on top of New Hampshire’s highest mountain. This two-day course with certified guides will help you prepare for nature’s coldest with the first day being a mix of indoor and outdoor learning and the second day a climb up Mt. Washington.
Gain confidence in climbing the Ice Coast, and obtain the necessary background to then continue hiking the best of New Hampshire's mountains. Any equipment you’ll need can be rented after arriving, including ice axes and more. Bring all of the gear you have to see if it makes the cut.
Mountaineering skills summary - Day 1:
This is a super intensive yet fun way to spend half a day. Learn how to use crampons (or any traction), properly. Understand the choreography between the ice axe your feet… the dance that is solely that of the mountaineer is far from random. Learn to rest step onto the higher ridges to conserve energy, and learn to breathe when the air thins as you climb. Learn how to self arrest with an ice axe, and even learn some rope tricks that can save your day — and maybe your life. The primary focus, however, is proper crampon techniques. While knowing self-arrest methods is a must, if you can stay on your feet you will always be ahead of the game.
The actual summit - Day 2:
What we have in New Hampshire we prefer to call “mountaineering lite,” but that term can be deceiving. Mt Washington and the other rugged summits of the northern Presidential Range have taken numerous lives. The highest summit, at only 6288′, is notorious and is billed as having the “world’s worst weather.” The guides you will accompany have summited successfully well over 200 times, to date, half of which have been done in winter, meaning they are uniquely qualified to guide you.
The cost of this trip includes the two-day course, one night of accommodation, and carpool from Boston. This adventure would normally cost $390 - the relationship we have with these local businesses allow us to give you the most affordable price allowed.
Accommodation can be selected below. Included in the price is hot water, sheets, electricity, and co-ed dorm-bunk style sleeping. We can check to see if there is any single-sex accommodation only after booking. If you do not need accommodation, do not select the option below.
If you live north of Boston you can be picked up at a Park & Ride if you wish, otherwise you may meet everyone at the destination. Previous experience hiking at least Mt. Monadnock qualifies you to join.
Cancellation policy for this trip:
A refund on the adventure course minus $30 can be offered up to two weeks in advance. After two weeks, there is no refund. A credit on carpool may be issued up to five days in advance. Lodging reservations will not be refunded unless someone is able to book your spot (minus $10).
