Lidzie Alvisa & Donis Llago
Opening reception, May 4
“Am I transparent? What do those in power see of me? And what do I of them?” These are some of the questions posed by Cuban artists Lidzie Alvisa and Donis Llago in their first exhibition in Boston, opening on May 4 at A R E A and on view until June 23rd.
Alvisa plays with the perception of the viewer and uses mirrors and texts made with pins—a material that has been significant throughout her career—allowing us to appreciate and recognize ourselves in the exhibition. She addresses transparency through an exploration of the self and reflects on honesty, exposure and vulnerability. Ultimately, this body of work is based on an existential examination of the contemporary being and the relationships with time.
Llago, on the other hand, presents transparency as the ideal architecture of political power. His new paintings show buildings that have a very intimate relationship with politics in different nations. The series is a call for open governments, greater access to government data, stronger guarantees to extend the freedom of information, and broader participation of the public in decision making.
Using transparency as a guiding thread, both artists come together—from fragility expressed in Alvisa’s installations to the rigidity of the structures represented on Llago’s canvases—to make us question aspects of everyday life, a political context that is constantly changing, and the lack of transparency that characterizes current times.
