The Buddhist practice of lojong (literally “mind training”) allows us to access our inherent compassion and work with it in an intelligent way. In our frenetic and often aggressive contemporary environment, these precious teachings can help us to function and connect with others using gentleness, humor and curiosity to penetrate difficult situations.
In order to help others, we first need to understand and work with our own emotional reactions. Doing this enables us to see how much we have in common with others, and defuses a judgmental approach to situations.
The practices of lojong and tonglen are challenging because we need to look directly at painful situations and not simply react by distancing ourselves or turning away. We will learn to cultivate bravery and patience in order to help ourselves and others in difficult circumstances.
Join us as we deepen our understanding of what it means to move from the path of individual liberation to the Bodhisattva Warrior Path of the Mahayana. Topics include the ground of wakefulness, introduction to mind training, training in relative bodhicitta, resting in ultimate bodhicitta, and Atisha’s seven points of mind training (lojong).
This class is open to everyone. Some previous meditation practice, and study of the basics of the Buddhist path are helpful, but not required.
Class format will be facilitated discussion, closely tied to passages in the readings from the Mahayana Volume of the Profound Treasury text. The expectation is that students will actively engage in the topics and complete each reading assignment prior to the class discussion.
The Three Volume Profound Treasury of the Ocean of Dharma texts present the Vidyadhara Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche’s teaching on the hinayana, mahayana, and vajrayana in a way that joins traditional Buddhist concepts with contemplative, experiential understanding, in vivid language which is as fresh today as when they were first taught.
