Have you ever wondered what it was like to live inside a townhouse on Beacon Hill? Tour the William Hickling Prescott House to find out! The Prescott House is open from 12-4pm, and 45-minute tours are led each hour (tours start at 15 minutes after the hour).
This lovely Federal period house was built in 1808 and is one of a pair of twin houses overlooking Boston Common. Designed by the esteemed architect Asher Benjamin the houses are highlighted by bow-fronts and a connecting colonnade with delicate fluted Doric columns on the ground floor.
From 1845-1859, the House was the home of noted historian, William Hickling Prescott. Prescott made major renovations to the house. Including constructing a third floor study, now faithfully restored, where he wrote several of his books.
After Prescott’s death his widow sold the house to her nephew and again made renovations to update the house for their time. Touring the house provides a history of how homes on Beacon Hill have had to be changed over time to meet the needs of their occupants.
In 1944 the House was purchased by The National Society of The Colonial Dames in the Commonwealth of MA who saved it from development and now use it as their headquarters. While touring the Prescott House visitors will get to see some elements from the Dames remarkable costume collection, selections of which are on continuous display.
Admission is $8. We are a member of the Blue Star Museums Initiative: admission for active-duty military personnel and their families is free. Group tours are only available by appointment.
