Thirsty Scholar Does Cinco de Mayo, Kentucky Derby

“Cinco de Drinko” and Derby Day are just around the corner which means it’s time to giddy up and fiesta at Thirsty Scholar Pub.

On Friday, take a trip south-of-the-border in a tequila-fueled celebration of Mexico with themed food and cocktail specials. Available on May 5 for the official Cinco de Mayo celebration, specialty sips include a Margarita Flight, ($21), a trio of variations (salted watermelon, habanero, original) in short glasses with salted rims; Salted Watermelon Margarita ($14) with blanco tequila, salted watermelon simple syrup, triple sec and lime; Spicy Margarita ($14) with habanero tequila, triple sec, simple syrup and lime; Mexican Mule ($12) with blanco tequila, lime and ginger beer; and Mezcal Paloma ($13) with mezcal, grapefruit and lime. To snack, there are a pair of Birria Tacos ($18) with tender marinated beef, onions and peppers served in mozzarella-stuffed tortillas with a side of rice; and a Stewed Chicken Plate ($17) with rice, beans and sweet plantains.

On Saturday, May 6, it’s time to get down and Derby for a 149th stakes race viewing party. The bar will be shaking up a bourbon-laced Mint Julep ($14) festively served in a silver cup over crushed ice.
