“Third Thursdays” monthly harmolodic jazz series continues in Nov. w/former Ornette Coleman collaborator Dave Bryant (keyboards), w/fellow Prime Time-ers Fred Williams (bass) & James Kamal Jones (drums), along w/Matt Lavelle (pocket trumpet, alto clarinet).
Harmolodic jazz genius Ornette Coleman once claimed that “It was when I found out I could make mistakes that I knew I was on to something.” Keyboardist Dave Bryant, whose jazz roots and practice stem from Coleman’s guidance, has created a monthly harmolodic jazz scene, where all the participants dig into this on-to-something playfulness, often resulting in a celebratory and mind-boggling spree.
If this coming month’s “Third Thursdays” lineup is any indication, Bryant’s monthly harmolodic jazz “party” will indeed be in full swing. For November, Bryant has invited Prime Time colleagues Fred Williams (bass) and James Kamal Jones (drums), along with Matt Lavelle (pocket trumpet and alto clarinet), to join him in the fun process of channeling their first-hand individual and collective inner-Coleman.
Bryant offers his perspective on what November’s “Third Thursday” could conjure up: “This month offers a very special harmolodic deep dive with Fred Williams, who was a member of the early and overlooked proto-Prime Time with James “Blood” Ulmer and Ronald Shannon Jackson, as well as James Kamal Jones, an under-documented Prime Time contributor in the ‘80s, and Matt Lavelle, a longtime collaborator with Bern Nix and a student of Ornette’s.”
