SYREN Modern Dance joins the Museum for a special virtual event this spring! After premiering their piece “Thina” this fall, SYREN Modern Dance teams up with us once again, after continuing to develop the piece throughout the winter of 2021, for a special evening of artistic conversation, and an encore performance created entirely in tandem with approved national restrictions in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Thina,” meaning us/we in Zulu, is a dance created by Kate St. Amand for the dancers of SYREN inspired by the work of South African composer Philip Miller. The project uses Miller’s re-creation of the beloved Reuben T. Caluza song “Influenza 1918” in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. SYREN is currently developing and rehearsing virtually, via Zoom, to create the dance in much the same way that Miller’s musical collaborators worked to create the song.
SYREN is a New York based modern dance company committed to bringing dynamic live performance to a growing and diverse audience base.
