The Epidemic of Elder Isolation
Social isolation and loneliness hurt the heart and soul of seniors, and for a number of this vulnerable group, they can have devastating and life-threatening effects. In fact, elder isolation is now widely considered to be an epidemic. The mortality risk associated with this exceeds the health dangers associated with obesity, and is equal to someone smoking at least 15 cigarettes a day. This is unacceptable. You can lead the way to help end this growing problem in Boston. How?
The Walk to End Elder Isolation--previously called FriendshipWalks--is our Third Annual Walk. We need YOU to make this the best Walk yet. The ambitious goal is to raise $100,000 to reduce elder isolation and loneliness in Boston and Brookline. FriendshipWorks' programs provide friendly volunteer support and assistance to the elders we serve, including one-on-one friendly visits, medical escorts, and friendly pet visits.
Form a team, walk in honor or memory of a special elder in your life, or dedicate the walk to an important friendship. Spend a great day walking around Jamaica Pond with friends, family and even your dog.
Every step you take will make a difference in the life of an elder – walk with us on Sunday, May 20!
