Join the Metropolitan Chorale, under the direction of Lisa Graham, on Sunday, May 14th at 3:00 PM at Sanders Theatre in Cambridge. The Metropolitan Chorale’s performance of Carmina Burana will feature baritone Bradford Gleim, soprano Caroline Corrales, and tenor Jonas Budris, and the Amherst-based Hampshire Young People’s Chorus. The Chorale will be presenting the two-piano and percussion version of this popular 20th century choral work. The ensemble will be collaborating with local pianists Julia Scott Carey and Melanie Rucinski, as well as actors from the Pazzi Lazzi Troupe, a Boston-based Commedia dell’Arte company. Is the wheel of fortune spinning out of control?? The last few years may suggest as much. Come lament, exalt or otherwise bask in Carl Orff’s musical drama.
About the Metropolitan Chorale: Founded in 1979, the Metropolitan Chorale is a 100-voice auditioned chorus that is recognized as one of Metro Boston’s premier choral ensembles. Since 2004, the ensemble has been under the direction of Dr. Lisa Graham who also serves as the Evelyn Barry Director of Choral Programs at Wellesley College. The emphasis on diverse and innovative programming, combined with excellence in performance, yields a unique artistic contribution to the Boston arts community. Broadway World applauded the ensemble for its “outstanding vocal talent [and] exceptional charisma” in its debut performance with the Boston Pops. The Chorale has also been praised by The Boston Musical Intelligencer for “its fine blend [and] well-shaped phrasing,” and most recently by the Boston Classical Review for its "warmth and agility” in a performance of Judith Weir’s Moon and Star with the New England Philharmonic. The Chorale was featured in the Intelligencer’s “Critics’ Faves” for 2019 for its performance of Leoš Janáček’s Amarus with Chorus pro Musica.
About the soloists:
Praised by the Boston Globe for his “voluminous baritone” and “brilliant delivery,” baritone Bradford Gleim performs throughout the United States and Europe. On the concert stage he has appeared with leading ensembles and in distinguished festivals including the Handel and Haydn Society, Tage Alter Musik Regensburg, Boston Baroque, and the San Francisco Early Music Society among others.
Praised for her “sizable and thrilling sound”, soprano Caroline Corrales is an operatic star on the rise. In the 2023 season, Caroline makes her role debut as Female Chorus The Rape of Lucretia as a Merola Artist with The San Francisco Opera. She will also be seen as a finalist in the International Belvedere Singing Competition in Dortmund, Germany.
Tenor Jonas Budris has performed, toured, and recorded with such groups as Cut Circle, Blue Heron, the Handel and Haydn Society, Boston Baroque, the Thirteen, and Skylark Vocal Ensemble. On the opera stage, Mr. Budris has performed principal and supporting roles with numerous musical organizations, including Pegasus Early Music, Opera Boston, OperaHub, Guerilla Opera, and Odyssey Opera.
