The Makanda Project's spring Dudley Square concert series begins with a performance featuring Marty Ehrlich (alto saxophone, flute, bass clarinet). Marty Ehrlich has been a leading figure in New York's creative music scene since settling there in the 1970s. He has worked in ensembles led by Muhal Richard Abrams, Andrew Hill, Julius Hemphill, Jack DeJohnette, Oliver Lake, John Zorn, and count less others, and led a wide variety of groups of different sizes and instrumentations, showcasing his composing as well as his improvising. He will be performing with the Makanda Project for the first time, and the program will feature two of his big band pieces along with several Makanda Ken McIntyre compositions. Kurtis Rivers, Marty Ehrlich, Paavo Carey, Arni Cheatham, Sean Berry, Charlie Kohlhase - saxophones; Jerry Sabatini, Haneef Nelson - trumpets; Ku-umba Frank Lacy, Tyler Bonilla, Bill Lowe - trombones; John Kordalewski - piano; Wes Brown - bass; Warren Smith - drums.
