For almost two decades now, the 13 piece jazz ensemble The Makanda Project has been building a Boston-area following through its ongoing series of self-produced free jazz concerts in Roxbury. As tours in Europe and the Midwest have brought the group wider recognition during the past year, they have continued their focus on the community-based performances that have been their foundation. This summer, for the 17th consecutive year, they will be presenting free outdoor concerts in the John Eliot Square neighborhood. The location is the lawn of First Church in Roxbury, a lovely setting for community gatherings with plenty of trees offering shade. As always, there will be special features for each concert - new music, different guest musicians, etc.
The lineup includes outstanding musicians from Boston as well as New York: Lee Odom - alto saxophone and flute; Andy Voelker - alto saxophone; Salim Washington - tenor saxophone, flute, bass clarinet, oboe; Temidayo Balogun - tenor saxophone; Charlie Kohlhase - baritone saxophone; Jerry Sabatini, Haneef Nelson - trumpet; Alfred Patterson, Sarah Politz - trombone; Bill Lowe - bass trombone; Naledi Masilo - voice; John Kordalewski - piano; John Lockwood - bass; Warren Smith - drums
