Join Kalimah Redd Knight, President of The League of Women for Community Service (LWCS), for an exploration of one of the nation’s oldest Black women’s service organizations.
LWCS was founded in the early 20th century by Maria Baldwin, an educator and civil rights activist, to provide a variety of social services for Boston’s African American community. This presentation will highlight the League’s historic legacy, efforts to restore its iconic headquarters at 558 Massachusetts Avenue, and its vision for the future. Through stories of the founders, an overview of archival materials , and insights into current and future goals, discover how LWCS continues to empower communities and celebrate Black and women’s history.
Program registration is free with a suggested donation to support Boston By Foot's nonprofit mission to inspire locals and visitors to discover and appreciate the diverse stories of Boston by exploring the cityscape together. Virtual programs are recorded and a link to the recording is sent to all registered participants a week after the program.
