Do people who speak different languages see the world differently? How much does the language we speak affect the way we think? To illustrate this, we will discuss several topics, including color terms, grammatical expressions of gender, and the concept of time. You might be surprised to learn that different languages have a different number of basic color terms; some have 12, some 11, and others only 2! As a speaker of English, which does not assign grammatical gender to inanimate objects, imagine you needed to portray a book, the moon, or death, as a person. Would they be masculine or feminine? While we are used to thinking about time as a linear concept, time and tense in some languages defy linear chronology with their reverse or even circular perception of time. Join us as we challenge our linguistic preconceptions and broaden our horizons.Instructor: Irena Stanic Rasin
