Many Forest Hills stories reveal the Victorians' love of home. Whether residing in a cottage or a mansion, they filled their rooms with mementos of family and friends. The idea of “home” implied a place of belonging. Despite protests, wealthy Samuel N. Brown (d.1912) had to surrender his Dartmouth Street mansion when the Boston Public Library wanted his land for their new headquarters. Author Edward Everett Hale (d. 1909) and his large family found happiness in their Greek Revival dwelling. Looking to provide a gracious home for aged couples of modest means, Dr. Elizabeth Carleton (d. 1925) dedicated her energies to this important social need. Please join us for a thoughtful stroll to visit the eternal resting places of people who cherished where they lived.
This walking tour lasts 90 minutes with frequent stops over varied terrain. Wear walking shoes and bring water.
