Jump into the sport of birding and be part of a global event! As we create a bird sightings list to submit as part of the event, we’ll also explore the themes of February in nature and the strategies different species employ at this time of year.
Every February, citizen scientists are invited to birdwatch for 15 minutes a day during four days in February, called the Great Backyard Bird Count! This global event is co-organized by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society, and Birds Canada. Data submitted during this event is aggregated to help scientists understand global migration patterns and bird populations.
We recommend downloading the Merlin or eBird apps ahead of time to assist you with identifying birds as you spot them.
Your guide will be Tim Puopolo, a Trustees ranger and naturalist, and recipient of the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation’s “Outstanding Park Interpreter” award.
Please note, though we love dogs, they are not permitted at Chestnut Hill Farm.
