The Farmer’s Office: Tools, Tips and Templates to Successfully Manage a Growing Farm Business

Small and mid-size farms are at the heart of a healthy and sustainable food system and whether you've been farming for many years or just getting started, your dream is to grow delicious, nutritious food and to become a responsible steward of the land.

But launching, running and growing a successful farm business requires you think like an entrepreneur and thoughtfully manage your business for success. Understanding the basics of accounting and bookkeeping, and how to manage a growing business is a must. "The Farmer's Office" is a comprehensive, accessible guide with tools to put beginning and established farmers on the path to achieve financial and operational sustainability.

5:30 pm
Tour the Newton Community Farm with Farmer Greg

6:00 pm
Welcome and Introductions

We recognize that a “reading” from such a book won’t be that engaging for this type of event (“To set-up a QuickBooks account…”), so the evening’s talk will include stories from farmers featured in the book (and at the event in person!) and how we can help our farmers, our community, members succeed.

7:30
Reception with food and beverage generously provided by Cuisine en Locale, Back Deck Boston, Barr Hill Gin

About Julia Shanks & The Farmer's Office:

For the last 8 years, Julia has been working with farmers to help them achieve and maintain financial sustainability; they are the linchpin to a thriving local food system. The Farmer’s Office is the culmination of all this work –comprehensive guide to coach farmers to think like entrepreneurs and business people, not just stewards of the land; to help farmers thrive as business owners. The book includes many of the tools and templates she created for my clients, along with many stories of farmers’ successes and struggles.

About Newton Community Farm:

The land that is now non-profit Newton Community Farm has been farmed for over 300 years. Originally settled in the late 1600’s, it was bought in 1917 by the Italian immigrant Angino family, from whom the City of Newton purchased it in 2005. The Angino farmstead reflects the history of Newton and the surrounding areas, from its roots in small-scale New England farming to early 20th century immigrant life to modern suburban development. In their preservation and renovation efforts, NCF seeks to recreate the simple, functional character of a small family farm and to retain the vestiges of a time when people were more connected with their food and cultural heritage.
