Please join us for our final season performance on Friday, March 22, 2024. Our concert will showcase relatively unknown composer Margaret Bonds's, Montgomery Variations. Montgomery Variations was discovered in 2017 in a box destined for the trash pile. The composition was inspired by the crucial first decade of the civil rights movement. Beginning with the Montgomery bus boycott and ending with the tragic bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church, this inspiring piece closes with a benediction, Ms. Bonds's vision for peace and racial justice.
Our evening and season finale will be Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 Pathétique. Perhaps this piece is best summed up by the composer himself: “I love it as I have never loved any one of my musical offspring before.” —Tchaikovsky, regarding his Sixth Symphony. The name Pathétique suggests pathos and emotion rather than the English translation of pathetic. As if to emphasize the drama of the piece, Tchaikovsky died ten days after conducting the Symphony’s premiere performance.
You will not want to miss this special evening with the Du Bois Orchestra!
