Join us for an evening of conversation and storytelling about Black joy, running, and representation
About this event:
We welcome Boston Globe columnist and creator of A Beautiful Resistance, Jeneé Osterheldt, to the stage with Ambassador, Mirna Valerio, to talk about how running is HER Beautiful Resistance.
About our speakers:
Jeneé Osterheldt, host: A culture columnist who covers identity and social justice through the lens of culture and the arts, Jeneé centers Black lives and the lives of people of color. Sometimes this means writing about Beyoncé and Black womanhood or unpacking the importance of public art and representation. Sometimes this means taking systemic racism, sexism, and oppression to task. It always means Black lives matter.
Mirna Valerio, special guest: A former teacher and cross-country running coach, Mirna Valerio has changed the status quo of what a runner looks like. When she toes the line at ultramarathons now (she’s done 14 of them to date), nobody gives her a sideways glance. Other runners know that the Mirnavator, as she goes by on social media, is one of them. Valerio has a high-energy personality and relentless perseverance when it comes to her running and her outreach. As a celebrated author, speaker, and anti-racism activist and consultant, she’s made it her life’s work to promote inclusivity, accessibility, and diversity in the outdoors. Her reach is strong: The New York Times once named her one of “Five People Who Can Help You Love Your Body” and The Wall Street Journal has called her a “voice for a whole class of athlete.”
