In 2015, Jason Turgeon and a Boston-based collective of makers created a 24:1 scale replica of a 1927 Underwood Portable Typewriter. The massive sculpture, dubbed the Blunderwood Portable, was set on fire at that year’s Burning Man festival. Three years later, a private collector approached Jason, inviting him to build a permanent Blunderwood Portable for a secluded sculpture park in Mexico. For a year, Jason juggled his day job with building the new Blunderwood in partnership with makers Nick Lauder, Doug Ruuska, and Michael “Dewb” Dewberry.
The Blunderwood Portable follows the fabrication and installation of this extraordinary work of art, from Boston to Philadelphia to Mexico. It also celebrates the Underwood Portable Typewriter, an almost-forgotten instrument that required thought and dexterity to properly use.
Preceded by a rare performance from the Boston Typewriter Orchestra, whose music is featured in the film, and followed by a discussion with the filmmaker, artist Jason Turgeon, and his maker partners.
Directed by Juan Mandelbaum (USA, 2020, 50 min.).
