For five decades, French pantomime Marcel Marceau entertained and touched audiences around the globe. In The Art of Silence, we meet the complex, compassionate man behind the white painted mask. As a teenager, Marceau eluded capture through mime, joined the French Resistance, and helped save hundreds of Jewish children. Maurizius Staerkle Drux’s revelatory film traces Marceau’s long history, career, and artistic journey, a career informed by his traumatic experiences during World War II. We meet his former protégées, students, and especially his family members, who today work to keep Marceau’s legacy alive.
Followed by a conversation with Director Maurizius Staerkle Drux (via Zoom) and Marcel Marceau’s grandson and film subject Louis Chevalier (in-person).
