In 1885, Rhode Island established the State Home and School for Dependent and Neglected Children to provide innovative support for children in need. The State Home integrated architecture, landscapes, social reforms, and public health strategies into its mission to revolutionize the experience and outcomes of children in its care.
The property is a remarkable survivor that represents nearly 100 years of the state’s evolving approaches to child welfare. Historic New England is pleased to host Elizabeth D. Warburton to discuss the property’s history, significance, enduring relevance, and preservation challenges.
Historic New England members are free; the nonmember ticket is $5.
