Collectively improvised, melody-driven, inventively original compositions. A spicy concoction of avant-garde jazz, Latin rhythms, Indian beats, chamber music, wild outbursts of multilayered sound and other far-flung styles. All spontaneously woven together by The Alchemists, a Boston-based free jazz band of genre-crossing musicians. Whether we begin with a discernible tempo or tune - or no set patterns at all - we always let the music go where it wants to go.
"Each of The Alchemists improvs on Journey To The East [our second release] is like a circus act of music, teasing the listener with suspense about what kind of feat will come next. But an hour spent with this band leaves an impression thats satisfying and sound; this is much more than just hearing great musicians being clever." - Steve Elman, online critic for The Arts Fuse
Band members: Matt Langley, Saxophones; Jerry Leake, Percussion; Dennis Livingston, Flute & Recorders; Bob Nieske, Bass; Randy Roos, Guitar.
Our two CDs - Potions (a CD Baby Editor’s Pick) and Journey To The East - may be purchased at the show or at https://thealchemists1.bandcamp.com/.
The Lilypad is a convivial, intimate space in the heart of Cambridge’s Inman Square at 1353 Cambridge St. It has the feel of a large living room, with seating on couches along the sides and benches and chairs in the center. Craft beer, wine, hard cider and soft drinks are available at a tiny bar tucked away in a corner.
Come join us! Doors open at 7:30 PM. Show starts 8:00 PM and ends around 9:00 PM. We’re always glad to talk with the audience afterward about how we create multi-genre, group improvisations.
Tickets are $10 at the door or in advance from Brown Paper Tickets - https://thealchemistslab.brownpapertickets.com. Seating is unreserved, first come, first served, but not to worry - all seats have good views.
Lilypad street parking is limited; Municipal Parking Lot on Springfield Street.
