In 1993, the then operators of the Brattle Theatre – Connie White and Marianne Lampke – along with local film stalwart Anne Marie Stein founded the Boston International Festival of Women’s Cinema. Over the course of 11 editions, from 1993-2003 the festival highlighted the best and most interesting films directed by women – hosting many filmmakers in person. The festival featured films by established artists like Agnès Varda, Ida Lupino, Penelope Spheeris, Agnieszka Holland, Barbara Hammer, Gillian Armstrong, Barbara Kopple, and Jane Campion alongside emerging directors like Allison Anders, Claire Denis, Cheryl Dunye, Lisa Cholodenko, Sofia Coppola, Deepa Mehta, Lynne Ramsay, Mary Harron, and many, many others. From documentary, to animation, to experimental, and narrative features, the festival showed the true range and power of films directed by women. On the occasion of its 25th anniversary, and as a capper to our own “Year of Women in Cinema,” we welcome the opportunity to feature just a small selection of the work championed by this wonderful endeavor.
