Abilities Dance Boston, a nonprofit that uses dance to

promote intersectional disability rights, is proud to announce an original ballet entitled, Tales from the Crips: Reimagining Fairy Tales from a Disabled Lens.

Performances are streaming live and in-person from the Strand Theatre, 543 Columbia Road, Boston, Mass. 02125 on Friday, November 8 & Saturday November 9, 2024 at 8pm ET.

This ballet is inspired by the book “Disfigured” by Amanda Leduc, which dismantles ableist tropes in fairy tales and discusses the impact on our understanding of the deaf/disabled community. During the world premiere of this ballet, the artists will unpack these tropes and recenter intersectional disabled identities into the forefront.

This ballet is family-friendly, but goes into the nuances of representation in fairy tales, ballets, and our communities overall. General admission tickets are $35, with an unlimited number of free/sliding scale tickets option. Tickets available now at ticketstripe.com/adbtales.

The show is choreographed and artistically directed by Founder/Executive & Artistic Director Ellice Patterson. The original score was created by Director of Music & Operations Andrew Choe. With this BIPOC and disabled artistic leadership team, there are intersectional themes woven throughout the tapestry of the show. The performers are questioning themes of Grimm Fairy Tales and classic tales and reframing disability identities within them:

 What if Sleeping Beauty had long covid/chronic fatigue?

 What if Mulan wasn’t disabled but still impacted by ableism because of

transforming her body to fit societal norms?

 What if the Maiden without Hands wasn’t celebrated because she received

hands at the end but because she embraces her limb differences as they are?

The dancers identify with these identities/closely resonate with the character’s

identities and infuse their personal experiences into the storyline.
