Surrealism(s) Then & Now celebrates the centennial of the Surrealist movement. The exhibition traces Surrealism’s evolution from its early 20th-century origins to its lasting influence. As a movement, Surrealism bequeathed a playful–yet penetrating–set of tools that continue to be utilized by artists today. Drawn from the museum's permanent collection, Surrealism(s) Then & Now highlights artists’ fascination with and exploration of the subconscious, sexuality, dreams, the interiority of the mind, the uncanny, and mythical imagery.
Artists on view include William Baziotes, Giorgio de Chirico, Gregory Crewdson, Max Ernst, Mona Hatoum, Frida Kahlo, Hayv Kahraman, Ljuba, René Magritte, André Masson, Roberto Matta, Tracy Moffatt, Tony Oursler, Pierre Roy, Kay Sage, Yves Tanguy, and others.
