Stitched Shibori Dyeing Workshop at deCordova
Stitched Shibori – 2-Session Workshop
Shibori is the umbrella term for the seemingly endless Japanese resist dyeing techniques. Resist techniques that use stitching are known as shibori nui. Explore how a simple running stitch can create dramatic lines with hira-nui shibori or a complex woodgrain pattern in mokume shibori. Use ori-nui shibori to create linear designs, gather and bind controlled shapes with maki-age shibori, work with symmetry and repetition of motif with miru shibori, karamatsu shibori and more.
No prior experience is necessary for this workshop in which you’ll create distinctive and elegant designs with indigo dye. Students will make at least 4 samples and are welcome to bring their own natural fiber garments/fabric to stitch and dye. The first session (October 1) will cover technique instruction, design planning, and include time for stitching and test dyeing. During the second session (October 8), students will troubleshoot pieces, complete bindings, dye pieces with multiple dips, and unbind pieces to reveal stunning designs.
Students are welcome to finish stitching or create more stitched pieces at home in the week between class sessions.
This fee covers both sessions of this 2-part workshop; your registration for the October 1st date also covers your admission to the second session on October 8. Your ticket includes tuition, and a materials fee covering dyes, equipment, and fabric. Registered students will receive an email with details and logistics at least one day prior to the workshop.
