SWITCHED to IMPROVISAION!
Andrew Hook, “Hi all! I'm a tuba player who is trying to take a trio on tour this summer! We are playing the music of Bob Stewart, Don Draper, and other free jazz tuba tunes. We are looking to play in Boston on June 30th…”.
Just for a little bit of back story: I am a classical tuba player who is now angry at the classical institution and am trying my hand at improvised music with some old friends who have always improvised.
The tuba is hot!
A case for the switch?

Josiah’s playing emphasizes traditional and contemporary jazz, with a mission to elevate the tuba as an engaging, improvising instrument not rooted to symphonic playing, or any particular genre. His debut album, “Not Now But Later” was released in 2016.
The touring band: Alex Desrivieres, Mikey Mester and Andrew Hook, now from Pittsburgh, Philly and New Jersey met in the summer of 2018 and after years of growing as musicians on their own, they are bringing their cohesive energy back to the northeast. This time, instead of playing pop hits for children, they are performing creative, improvisatory music that has involved the tuba as its base instrument.
The trio decided that the “school” of the street, the road, is where you get your chops sharpened, tested, created, etc.
And when you learn that Andrew Hook had his initial training and degree at Carnegie Mellon Univ in Pittsburg, too, in CLASSICAL Tuba performance then, SWITCHED TO, connected with the improvisational world, that’s something noteworthy!
The other trio members, whom he knew at Mellon were already improvisers, so Andrew’s collaboration went beyond the moment.
And then setting the trio up with a solid, creative and important Boston Tuba/Bass player in Josiah Reibstein’s own music, resulting in an evening of fun and serious creativity!

Josiah Reibstein is a Boston tubist, bassist, composer, and bandleader active in New England. Josiah has been lucky enough to perform throughout New England and the US. He has played with Charles Neville, the Revolutionary Snake Ensemble, the Either/Orchestra, Amadee Castanelle, and many other luminaries in the fields of jazz and improvised music. He’s also shared the stage with Sean Jones, Jason Anick, Jerry Bergonzi, and Marshall Gilkes.
Josiah teaches private lessons on tuba, euphonium, baritone horn, trombone, trumpet and french horn, for all ages. As well as providing freelance instruction around the Cambridge and Boston areas, he is lesson faculty in brass at Newton Music and Arts, where he leads a small studio. As the first jazz student to enroll in the dual degree program at NEC and Harvard, pianist Malcolm Campbell ’11 received a high level of education in both music and science.
Now a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard, Malcolm said his NEC experience prepared him for the academic world.
Born with many talents for both artistry and scientific invention, drummer Joe Musacchia is making an impact in neuroscience research and jazz music communities through publication and musical performance and composition.
Being inspired by the music of great tuba players Bob Stewart, Ray Draper and Theon Cross, Andrew Hook has been spending a lot of time transcribing their music and wants this tour to be an opportunity to share the tuba with friends and audiences. The tuba is the original jazz bass instrument! Andrew is in Pittsburgh as a music teacher based in finding creative ways to perform with the tuba and give music freely improvised to as much of the Pittsburgh community as possible. 'Mommas Made a Mess', his second line band, 'Bombici', his balkan band, and various groups of rotating musicians help make this music philosophy come to life!
Based out of New Jersey, Alex Desrivieres is an up and coming saxophonist, composer, and woodwind doubler, continuing to hone his craft and learn as if he were to live forever. It is this idea of always moving forward that led to the creation of his debut album, “May the Sun Never Set.”Although jazz is his primary musical outlet, Alex has explored the music of video games, film, pop, and world music for inspiration. He studied saxophone at Kean University with Andy Fusco and Walt Weiskopf, where he graduated Cum Laude with a major in Music Performance with an emphasis in Pedagogy and a minor in Chinese Studies. He has also received a Graduate performance certificate in Oboe from Montclair State University.
Mikey Mester has been playing drums ever since he was 10 years old. It started as a little boy wanting to be exactly like his brother, who also played drums, but it quickly turned into a passion. Mikey studied at Kutztown University and is currently studying at Temple University for his masters degree. He has studied with some of the best drummers, including John Riley, Khary Abdul Shaheed, Ari Hoenig, and is currently studying with Justin Faulkner. Mikey currently teaches drums and freelancers.
