During a series of concerts in homeless shelters, a recovery site and an affordable housing community earlier this year, a quartet of musicians led by Shelter Music Boston Artistic Director Adrian Anantawan played sets meant to evoke feelings of joy, sadness, peace and hope. Afterwards, they asked clients and staff about other music that inspires those emotions in them. A list of those selections – ranging from Survivor’s 1980s anthem “Eye of the Tiger'' and A Tribe Called Quest’s 1990 hip-hop classic “Can I Kick It?” to the modern Portuguese standard “Eu Gosto de Você” – were offered to four classical composers as inspiration for new chamber pieces that would evoke the same feelings. These new works will anchor live performances at several shelters next month and in a public concert on September 27.
Shelter Music Boston provides 60-70 live concerts and monthly virtual concert recordings each year to organizations dedicated to serving men, women, and children experiencing homelessness, housing insecurity, or in substance misuse recovery throughout Greater Boston.
