Somerville Community Corporation Annual Member Event

The Somerville Community Corporation is once again hosting its annual member appreciation event at the Center for Arts at the Armory on Highland Ave. This annual event welcomes community members, program participants, and residents to enjoy arepas from Carolicious, listen to music by the Joe Grogran Jazz Trio, and to come together in community. Join us to hear testimonials from participants in the residential first source jobs programming and to listen to updates from economic development director, state senator, and board members.

SCC invites all community members to join and celebrate their progress of the past twelve months in affordable housing, good jobs, equitable opportunity, and social justice. At the event, we’ll hear from participants in the Women’s Empowerment Group, learn about programming such as the Mobile Computer Lab, the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Justice initiative, and the BIPOC Leadership roundtable. Join together with members of the 160 families who will reside in the new Clarendon Hill affordable public housing units, residents of the future rehabbed buildings at 657-659 Somerville Avenue, 27 Everett Avenue, and 29 Jackson Road, some of the 263 first time homebuyer course participants, and a few of the 304 job seekers who participated in the First Source  program. 

 The event will also celebrate the successes of the past five decades, including:

• Building or preserving 450+ affordable homes
• Placing over 521 job seekers into good jobs
• Helping hundreds of residents achieve financial stability and build their assets through the financial literacy and First Time Home Buyer program.
• Acquiring 121 permanently affordable homes through the 100 Homes and 49 More Homes Programs
• Increasing Somerville’s housing linkage fee to $10.00/square foot in 2017  to help create more affordable housing and currently at $22.91/square foot
• Instituting a jobs linkage fee at $2.45/square foot in 2017 to support Somerville’s workforce and currently at $2.99/square foot
• Launching the Culinary Peer Training program through First Source Jobs
• Inspiring several successful Somerville city councils runs
• Moving ahead with the partnership to redevelop Clarendon Hill public housing, one of Somerville’s largest affordable housing resources
• Mobilizing hundreds of residents to pass Somerville’s Community Preservation Act; increase Inclusionary Zoning to 20%; and support a groundbreaking $4 million Community Benefits Agreement in Union Square

Join SCC on April 10 at 191 Highland Avenue as they build on fifty years of history and begin to envision a Somerville where:

• Families and individuals from many diverse backgrounds and cultures enjoy equitable access to secure housing, economic stability, and opportunities for leadership and active engagement.
• Community change is embraced in a way that people share in the benefits of growth and development, no longer threatened by escalating living costs or the inability to keep or find a nearby job.
• The expansion of the MBTA Green Line offers terrific opportunity and potential for jobs for Somerville residents as new developments come to our community.
• Low and moderate-income residents and those who have recently come from other countries and cultures, are included in the process of planning for and being involved in a more inclusive, equitable future for the city.
